Exploring a life dedicated to art, education, and social empowerment.
How often do we stop to reflect on the architecture of a lifetime? When we talk about “learning,” we frequently focus on test scores, skill acquisition, or professional advancement. But true learning – the kind that shapes societies and inspires generations – is often a creative, lifelong journey of connecting tradition with innovation and intellect with service.
This week, we were reminded of this powerful truth at an event held on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons in Patna. The event, a Vridh-Vimarsh va Samman Samaroh (Elderly Discussion and Honor Ceremony) hosted by the Abhilasha Jyoti Foundation, celebrated the incredible reservoirs of knowledge held by our senior citizens.
A Legacy of Firsts and Foundations
Amidst the celebratory blooms and esteemed dignitaries, one figure stood out: Dr. Mridula Prakash, a true exemplar of a life lived through creative learning. The newspapers reported on her well-deserved honor, but the certificate she received (a “Letter of Honour” from the Abhilasha Jyoti Foundation) reveals the stunning depth of her contributions.
Dr. Prakash is not just an educationist; she is an artist, a scholar, and a pioneer. Consider this learning milestone: she is the author of the first-ever PhD on Mithila (Madhubani) Paintings. By diving deep into her own culture’s artistic heritage and creating formal, academic scholarship for it, she didn’t just study history; she helped preserve and elevate it. Her journey shows us that learning must start with understanding where we come from.

Building the “School of Creative Learning”
But her learning journey didn’t end with scholarship. Since 1997, Dr. Prakash has translated her deep understanding of art, culture, and child development into a living laboratory: the School of Creative Learning in Patna.
As the Founder Principal of this CBSE institution serving nearly 600 children, she champions a specialized “Creative Learning” model. The success of this model is evidenced by the national attention it has garnered—featured by major platforms like NDTV, India Today, and Zee News. More impressively, the school was selected by NITI Aayog to host an Atal Tinkering Lab.
Think about that integration. A leading expert in traditional, centuries-old Mithila art successfully implementing a future-forward Tinkering Lab. This is the ultimate lesson in creative learning: combining the wisdom of the past with the tools of the future to create a space where youth can truly innovate. True creativity doesn’t discard tradition; it uses tradition as a springboard.
Learning in Service to Others
The most profound lesson Dr. Prakash offers us is that knowledge gains its true value only when it is used to serve others. Her learning path extends far beyond the school:
- Social Work: She currently serves as the Secretary (Mantri) of the Mahila Charkha Samiti (founded in 1912).
- Cultural Leadership: She is the Director (Education, Culture & Museum) of the esteemed Bihar Vidyapith.
Her life validates the powerful message delivered at the ceremony by other leaders like Dr. Anil Sulabh, who said the elderly are “living knowledge treasuries” (ज्ञान-कोष) and spending time with them makes life valuable. The recognition of Dr. Prakash with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mithila Centre, USA, and numerous other honors, simply confirms what her work already demonstrates.
Embracing a Lifetime of Integrated Learning
What can we take from the journey of Dr. Mridula Prakash?
- Integrate Your Passions: Don’t pigeonhole learning. Art and science, scholarship and administration, tradition and innovation—all can exist in one brilliant ecosystem.
- Give Back Your Knowledge: Knowledge becomes legacy when it helps empower a community, whether by fostering education in children or serving institutions for women’s development.
- Honor the Knowledge Treasuries: Look around you. The experience, wisdom, and life stories of seasoned leaders and elders are valuable learning resources that we cannot afford to lose.
We congratulate Dr. Mridula Prakash on her well-deserved honor, but even more, we celebrate her ongoing masterclass in the art of living a life of creative learning. Her journey is a testament to the belief that true education is a masterpiece built over a lifetime, one brushstroke at a time.
