Kanka Gajendra Centre for Inclusive Learning (KGCIL)

Count Ability, Not Disability

Genesis

The Kanka Gajendra Centre for Inclusive Learning (KGCIL) was established by the Association for Promotion of Creative Learning (APCL) in collaboration with the Kanka-Gajendra Foundation (UK), within the School of Creative Learning campus in Patna, Bihar.

This center emerged from a shared vision to transform how learning challenges are understood and addressed in schools. The idea took root during the International Conference on Educational and Social Inclusion (2011), co-organized by APCL and the Kanka-Gajendra Foundation, where educators, scientists, and practitioners called for a systemic approach to inclusive education in India.

The Mission

KGCIL exists to unlock every child’s learning potential—regardless of diagnosis, background, or ability.

We believe that difference is not deficit, and that all children can thrive when met with compassion, creativity, and understanding.

Our work centers on:

  • Identifying learning differences early
  • Supporting families and educators
  • Designing adaptive teaching tools and training
  • Creating emotionally safe learning environments

What We Do

At KGCIL, we recognize that every child has a natural learning rhythm—influenced by genetics, upbringing, environment, and emotion. When traditional schooling methods clash with this rhythm, children may feel alienated, anxious, or inadequate.

This disconnect often leads to misdiagnosis, academic underperformance, and—at worst—emotional trauma. KGCIL steps in to bridge that gap through:

  • Screening & early identification of learning difficulties such as:
    • Dyslexia
    • Dyspraxia
    • Dyscalculia
    • Dysgraphia
    • ADHD and other attention/sensory challenges
  • Custom learning tools designed for different cognitive profiles
  • Inclusive pedagogy training for teachers and caregivers
  • Parent counseling to support children’s growth both in school and at home
  • Whole-child care—from prenatal parenting guidance to classroom success strategies

Core Objectives

To help children recognize and reach their full learning potential

  • To train teachers in child-specific teaching methods and classroom strategies
  • To counsel families and caregivers on how to support their children with care, not pressure
  • To shift societal attitudes around learning challenges from stigma to empathy

Key Activities

  • One-on-one counseling for students struggling in school
  • Family guidance sessions to help parents foster nurturing, supportive home environments
  • Teacher training workshops on differentiated instruction and child psychology
  • Development of learning materials that align with different learning styles

The Larger Vision

Inclusive education is not about fitting children into a system. It’s about reshaping the system to fit every child.

KGCIL aims to become one of India’s leading research and resource centers in inclusive learning. We envision a future where every school—not just special ones—has the training, tools, and mindset to support children with diverse learning needs. We believe that true success lies in recognizing and nurturing every child’s unique abilities—whether they learn through pictures, movement, silence, or story.

The Kanka-Gajendra Foundation is based in the UK and registered with the Charity Commission (Reg. No. 1124124), the Kanka-Gajendra Foundation exists to create sustainable change through health, education, equity, and cultural awareness. Their partnership with APCL brings together shared values of dignity, inclusion, and community-rooted innovation.
