Competency of Reading refers to the capacity of interpreting certain symbols of the language, such as words, sentences etc. in written form. The reading may be loud or silent. Some of the basic principles involved in designing activities for developing competencies for reading is as follows:
Learners may be encouraged to read alphabets, words, sentences, paragraphs, etc. For this purpose, flash cards, flip chart etc. may be prepared. Initially, it would be better to prepare cards of known and familiar words.
Learners should be encouraged to identify the whole word as a picture just like alphabet. This helps them in faster reading later.
While preparing cards it would be better to give a picture of the idea inherent in the word or sentence just by the side of the word, phrase or sentence. This helps in reading the whole word, phrase, or sentence as one symbol.
Separate exercises should be prepared for loud and silent reading.
For loud reading simulation activities pertaining to various situations such as News Reading, Speech Reading, etc. may be prepared.
Gradually, the speed of the reading should also be monitored. For such monitoring see Speed Reading cards.
